Evelyn Pielou was born in Bognor Regis, England. She studied at the University of London and became a biologist, eventually becoming a professor at Dalhousie University and Oil Sands Environmental Research professor at the U. of Lethbridge. She contributed significantly to the development of mathematical ecology and wrote several books. She received the Lawson Medal, the Eminent Ecologist Award and the Distinguished Statistical Ecologist Award from the International Congress of Ecology.
